Python Leading in the List of Top 10 Programming Languages in 2017
IEEE Spectrum has recently published its fourth annual ranking of Top Programming Languages for the year 2017. Python which was on third step in 2016 ranking has climbed up to the first position leading the list of Top 10 programming languages.
Many times students ask me which programming language is in demand currently to decide their career path or to pursue specialization courses. The best way is to look at such rankings which are drawn from the extensive studies performed by authenticated groups taking various parameters in account.
IEEE spectrum publishes annual ranking of Top Programming Languages with the first brought out in 2014. This year’s ranking is the result of research carried out by IEEE on the basis of 12 metrics based on developer’s job openings posted by employers. The data was gathered from 10 different sources viz. Google Search, Stack Overflow, Google Trends, Twitter, GitHub, Reddit, Hacker News, CareerBuilder, Dice and IEEE digital library. A second level filtering was carried out to determine the languages holding the interest of companies irrespective of mobile or desktop environments.

If we carefully observe the annual rankings of previous years including the one published in 2017, it is worth noticing that:
- R has been swinging in between 5th and 6th places since 2015 . This may be due to the interest of developers and data scientists in R seen from stack overflow, the increase in the number of articles, papers and books in IEEE Xplore digital library. This clearly shows the growing interests of people in data science and data analytics.
- C, the most fundamental and favorite language for developers which stood on the first place in 2016 has just gone down to second place with Java following the behavior from second place to third place this time.
- Swift which was not in the list last year has made to appear at 10th rank while Ruby could not make up to stand in Top 10 this year due to shrink in its job openings.
- C++ is the only consistent language not leaving its rank either to move up or to slip down the ladder whereas PHP and Javascript have exchanged their ranks.
- GOLANG, commonly known as Go, an open source language, has acquired the ninth place in the list. The open source, cross-platform programming language with first-class library is becoming a popular choice for IT companies.
