Journey of Android Versions – What after Z?

Android is hot favorite Operating System for smart phone users since the first version of Android was released in late 2007. Android is considered as a powerful Operating System which supports a large number of applications in Smart Phones. The smart phone applications make our life more comfortable and advanced. Android Operating System is conveniently spread across cell phones, notebooks and tablets, TV and other devices.

It’s been almost 10 years since Android’s inception and in this period Google has announced its 14th release recently. During this journey, they have figured out the sweet recipe of success for the highly preferred Operating System Android taking it to a better level every time with its new release. The journey of Android is very tempting to sweet lovers starting with alphabet “C”. It is assumed that 1.0 must have a code name starting with “A” and 1.1 starting with “B,” but no such code names were actually assigned. Let us explore all tasty treats of Android.

Android Versions

Interesting point to note here is that Google has given names of its Operating System on sweet names, in alphabetical order referred to as code names. Google installs a gigantic mascot representing these code names in their lawn at Mountain View each time a new version is near its launching. I recently came across a discussion that the speed at which Android versions are released, all the alphabets will be soon utilized reaching upto Z and the code names that Google is following will no longer be available. Have you ever thought, what will happen to Android version names once all English alphabets are used up?

Well, this interesting question can have infinite solutions and it is certainly possible that none of these will match the thinking of Google. As such, there are n number of possibilities for naming the subsequent releases to come out of this naming crisis, some of which are quite promising.

  • Android version names may restart from A again to reach Z, but this time the names can be on some deserts or beverages or starters instead of sweets. This seems to be the most likely case.
  • The names after Z can follow the standard naming convention of Computer Science viz. names starting from AA, AB, AC…AZ, BA,… and so on to exhaust in 702 version which sounds pretty good. In this case every Android update can be assigned a name instead of giving it only to major updates.
  • Simplest option is to follow the standard software versioning system i.e. attaching numeric version number with the names. Hence some of the possibilities are to have Android A1, A2… etc. or Android A1.1, A1.2… etc. to denote small updates in the respective versions.
  • Android versions can be assigned the nomenclature similar to mobile handsets to name them as Android Gen1, Gen2 and so on.
  • To fulfill the expectations of its users, Google may come up with a new improved Operating System for more acceptances worldwide to replace Android. So, there will not be any need of following the same code names.
  • Internet of Things and Virtual Reality are already in air recently. It is possible that some new technology around these concepts may result into an Operating System we have never thought of.

Google had announced that Android versions will now be released on yearly basis. Thus, last year we saw Android Nougat, 2017 is expected to be known for the year of Android O, and so on. Heading this way, it is going to take almost a decade to reach Z and in the meantime lot of things can happen.  Possibilities are endless, we just will have to wait till 2026 to see what exactly will happen to the Android names. Let us count on these version names to find out more on it.
